Flamengo vs Estudiantes: ¿Quién pasa a la final?

Flamengo to Reach the Libertadores Final: Why the Models Back Them at the Maracanã

Flamengo to Reach the Libertadores Final: Why the Models Back Them at the Maracanã

The surface narrative says Estudiantes were the better side in La Plata. They fired 21 shots, six on target, and Agustín Rossi had to make six saves to keep it goalless. Flamengo managed five shots, none on target. Dig past that, and all three models still land firmly on a Flamengo win at the Maracanã.

Here is what the shot count hides. Flamengo are unbeaten in 14 Libertadores matches, and at home they have out-possessed and out-shot every opponent this tournament, averaging 59% possession and 19.6 shots. First legs away are not where Flamengo do their damage. Their season numbers, 14 goals scored and just 2 conceded in six games, point to a team that has been far more dominant than the 0-0 suggested.

Estudiantes arrive on the back of a 2-1 league defeat to San Lorenzo, conceded in the final play, and their league form is patchy: one win in their last five. Their route to the semi-final has been built on resisting away, but the models see the Maracanã as a different test, with Flamengo regaining Jorginho and riding a 3-0 win at Bahia on Sunday.

KEY MATCH FACTORS

- Flamengo have won six of seven home games against Argentine sides in Libertadores knockout rounds.
- Season goal difference of +12 for Flamengo against +1 for Estudiantes.
- Flamengo won 61% of their aerial duels in the competition, the best rate in the tournament.
- Jorginho returns from suspension, though De Arrascaeta and Danilo remain out.
- Estudiantes have scored just 6 goals in six games and failed to find the net in the first leg despite 21 shots.

Estudiantes will make this uncomfortable, as they did in La Plata. But the models agree the Maracanã tilts the tie firmly towards Flamengo.

Flamengo win: home scoring power decides the tie

The first-leg xG-style picture favours Estudiantes in volume, but the underlying scoring profile still points to Flamengo. They have 14 goals in six games this season, and the model puts heavy weight on their goals scored at home, which is where this tie will be decided.

Estudiantes have scored only 6 in six and carry a goal difference of +1 against Flamengo's +12. That gap is the single most telling metric here. Their 21 shots in La Plata produced nothing, which suggests either poor shot quality or a keeper, Rossi, in exceptional form. Regression says neither repeats indefinitely, but Flamengo also don't need to out-shoot them: they need one or two clean chances in a stadium where they usually generate plenty.

Recent form supports the picture. Flamengo's last five show three wins and two draws, including a 3-0 at Bahia on Sunday, with the defence conceding very little. Estudiantes' last five: one win, two draws, two defeats, scoring in only three.

The head-to-head is tight, with Flamengo unbeaten in the last five meetings and winning three. The draw and penalties remain a tail outcome, but the central expectation is a Flamengo home win.

Flamengo win: 69.8% says the shot count is a mirage

Let's be blunt: 21 shots and zero goals is not dominance, it's a very expensive way to draw 0-0. My model gives Flamengo 69.8%, the draw 20.0% and Estudiantes 10.2%, and that spread barely flinches because of what happened in La Plata.

The market loves a shiny shot tally. I prefer the uncomfortable truth: volume without finishing is noise, and Estudiantes managed none of it where it counts. Flamengo, meanwhile, were happy to sit through the storm, take the clean sheet and move the tie to the one stadium where they have controlled every home game this tournament.

The gaps that drive my number are the home-away splits. Flamengo as hosts and Estudiantes as visitors sit far apart, and the distance between the away side and the draw is the biggest chunk of the edge. A 20.0% draw is real, since penalties are a legitimate way for this to end, but it is the second most likely outcome by a wide margin.

Estudiantes at 10.2% is the price of needing to win a knockout game in Rio while their league form wobbles. Sentiment says brave underdog. My model says the numbers don't care about bravery.

Flamengo should win and book their place in the final

I watched the first leg and Estudiantes were really good, no doubt. They pushed, created chances and made Flamengo uncomfortable. But Flamengo got the result they needed, a clean sheet, and now they get to finish the job at home.

What stands out to me is how well Flamengo have performed all year. Five wins and a draw from six games, 16 points, and they just beat Bahia 3-0 away on Sunday. That is a team that is rolling. Estudiantes, on the other hand, have 9 points from six and lost late to San Lorenzo in the league, in a game where they rotated heavily with this semi-final in mind.

The key factor for me is how much Flamengo have taken from their home games, and the points gap between the two sides is huge. At the Maracanã they usually keep the ball and keep attacking, and that is hard to survive for 90 minutes.

Yes, De Arrascaeta is out, but Jorginho is back and the team looks deep. Estudiantes will stay in it with their pressing and set pieces, but I expect Flamengo to find a way and go through.
