Newcastle Look Shaky, but All Three Models Back Them at Palace

Newcastle Look Shaky, but All Three Models Back Them at Palace

On the surface, this looks like a trap for Newcastle. They have lost two in a row, shipped four at Coventry, and fell flat against Aston Villa last time out. Palace, meanwhile, have just taken a point in Istanbul and won at home against Nottingham earlier this month. The easy read is that the hosts hold the momentum.

The models see it differently. Palace were hammered 5-0 at Brighton on Sunday, conceding three in the opening ten minutes, and the season numbers are ugly: 17 goals against in seven games, a goal difference of -8. Newcastle's own defence has leaked too, but they sit a point clear with 10 goals scored and a far less damaged ledger. Add a Europa League schedule that has Palace playing Thursday night in Turkey before a Sunday trip back to the league, and the hosts have little time to reset.

Newcastle's Villa defeat also tells a more nuanced story. They improved after the break, hit the side netting, forced saves, and lost to one header. The issue was final-third decision-making, not collapse. That is fixable, and Joelinton's return to the XI gives them something to build on.

KEY MATCH FACTORS

- Palace have conceded 17 goals in seven league games, the worst defensive record of the pair.
- Newcastle have scored 10 to Palace's 9, with a better goal difference (-4 vs -8).
- Palace were beaten 5-0 at Brighton and have only a few days after a European trip to Turkey.
- Newcastle's Villa loss was a one-goal game with plenty of second-half pressure.
- Newcastle sit on 8 points to Palace's 7, a small but telling edge.

The models do not see a rout. They see a visitor with enough structure to edge a wobbling home side, and every one of them lands on the same answer: Newcastle.

Newcastle edge it: Palace's defensive record decides

The central number is goals against. Palace have conceded 17 in seven league games, a goal difference of -8, and the Brighton result, five without reply, fits a pattern of conceding in clusters. That figure is what drives my model more than anything else.

Newcastle's output is modest but sturdier: 10 scored, 14 conceded, goal difference -4. Their attacking numbers away from home are what the model leans on, and with Wissa and Barnes starting to create chances, there is enough output to exploit a leaky back line.

Recent form is a mixed signal. Newcastle have won two of their last five but lost heavily at Coventry and Leeds. Palace have a win, two draws and two defeats, with the defeats arriving by a combined 8-2 margin in the last two losses. The goal swings matter more than the points.

The model gives Newcastle 46.7%, Palace 27.0% and a draw at 26.4%, so the draw cannot be dismissed. But on defensive concession alone, the balance tilts to the visitors.

Newcastle win: the numbers prefer the visitors

Let's be blunt: nobody is falling in love with Newcastle here, and my model isn't either. It gives them 45.1%, Palace 24.4% and the draw 30.4%. That is a lean, not a lock, and anyone claiming otherwise is selling something.

What I care about is the gap between the away win and the draw. Newcastle sit well clear of the draw, and the implied probability of the visitors keeps pulling the favourite's number up even after two straight defeats. The market tends to overreact to the last result, and the last result here is a narrow loss to Villa and a messy night at Coventry.

Palace at 24.4% is the uncomfortable part for home supporters. A 5-0 loss four days ago does not vanish because the venue changes. Their numbers reflect a side that gives up chances in bunches.

The draw at 30.4% is real, and I won't pretend it isn't. But when I weigh the favourite's probability against the field, Newcastle come out on top. Thin edge, cold read, no sentiment.

Newcastle to win at Palace, and I'm fairly comfortable

Here's what I see when I actually watch these two. Palace just got taken apart at Brighton, three goals down inside ten minutes, and that kind of game leaves a mark. They showed fight in Turkey, sure, but they also threw away a lead late on and now have to turn around quickly for a league game.

Newcastle have had a rough patch, no argument. But the Villa game wasn't a disaster. They controlled spells, got better after halftime, and just lacked the final ball. Joelinton coming back in gives them more bite in the middle.

On the table, it's tight: Newcastle on 8 points, Palace on 7. But the home side's results at Selhurst haven't been enough to make them favourites, and the visitors look more settled on the day.

It won't be pretty and Palace can absolutely nick it, especially with Mateta back among the goals. I just think Newcastle have the steadier footing right now, and they take the points.
