Liverpool vs Chelsea: Draw or Anfield Win? Our Models Split on the EFL Cup Tie

Liverpool vs Chelsea: Draw or Anfield Win? Our Models Split on the EFL Cup Tie

Anfield hosts Xabi Alonso's first visit as Chelsea boss on Wednesday, and our models can't agree on how it ends. Two lean toward a Liverpool win, one smells a stalemate, and none of them is shouting.

The case for Liverpool is simple. They have won four of their last five, including a 4-3 comeback against Villarreal in the Champions League and a 2-0 win over Brighton on Sunday. The only blemish was a 0-3 loss to Man City. Chelsea arrive after a flat 0-2 home defeat to Tottenham, with Cole Palmer suspended after his red card.

But this is a cup tie, and rotation is expected on both sides. Liverpool have a big Premier League date with Arsenal on Sunday, so fringe players may start. Chelsea showed real quality in that 5-1 win over Bournemouth and the 2-0 win at Everton, and the last meeting between these two ended 1-1. That is why one perspective sees a tight draw rather than a home victory.

KEY MATCH FACTORS

- Liverpool's momentum: four wins in five, with comebacks showing resilience.
- Chelsea's dip: a 0-2 loss to Spurs and Palmer's absence through suspension.
- Rotation risk: both benches will be tested, which could even things out.
- Home advantage: Anfield remains a hard place to win, as Alonso knows from past visits.
- Head to head: recent meetings are tight, with a 1-1 draw in May and one-goal margins in most of the last five.

In short, the models are split because the evidence points in different directions: form says Liverpool, a rotated cup tie says coin flip. Below, each model explains how it reads the match.

Liverpool win: home edge outweighs Chelsea's away output

My model puts Liverpool at 43.0%, Chelsea at 32.9% and the draw at 24.1%, so I see a modest home advantage rather than a runaway. The home factor is the main driver: Anfield matches with this level of attacking output tend to tilt toward the hosts.

Look at Liverpool's recent scoring: 4 goals against Villarreal, 6 at LASK, 2 at Brentford and 2 against Brighton. That is consistent output across competitions, and they have won four of five. Chelsea's away picture is less convincing. They scored 2 at Everton but were beaten 0-3 at Brentford earlier in the season, and the 0-2 loss to Tottenham shows the attack can stall.

The visitors' goals per game and win rate on the road are decent but not enough to overcome the venue. Crucially, I see the draw as unlikely at 24.1%, since both sides generate enough chances for a decisive result. Chelsea remain competitive at 32.9%, so this is a lean toward Liverpool, not a lock. The head to head, with a 1-1 draw last May, reminds me margins are thin.

Draw: the market sees a stalemate at Anfield

Let's be blunt: nobody wins this argument on numbers alone. My model gives Liverpool 30.6%, the draw 35.7% and Chelsea 33.8%. That is a three-way shrug, and the uncomfortable truth is that the favorite here isn't even a favorite.

The gap between the draw and the next best outcome is only 1.9 points, so my confidence is low. I'm not pretending otherwise. What tips me toward the draw is the spread itself: with Chelsea at 33.8%, the away side is almost level with the home side, and the market doesn't give Liverpool the usual home-cup premium. When the favorite's probability sits at 30.6%, there is no favorite to back.

Could Liverpool win? Absolutely, they're not dismissible. Could Chelsea? Same. But if you force me to choose the single most likely result among three nearly equal ones, the stalemate edges ahead. Anyone telling you this is a safe pick either way is selling something. I lean draw, with all the humility a 35.7% number deserves.

Liverpool to edge it at home

I'm going with Liverpool, but it's not a slam dunk. Watching them lately, they just find ways to win. That 4-3 against Villarreal after going two down was wild, and beating Brighton 2-0 on Sunday showed they can also keep it tidy. Four wins in five is a team that believes in itself, and Anfield only adds to that.

Chelsea looked flat against Tottenham. They had moments, but they never really took control, and then Palmer got sent off, so he's out here too. Without him, the attack loses its main creator, and that matters in a tight game.

Still, I wouldn't write Chelsea off. They can play well, like in the win at Everton, and cup nights can get strange with rotated squads. A draw is very much on the table. But my gut says Liverpool's home consistency and confidence carry them through. I'd call it a slight edge, not a comfortable one.
